Dental Sealants

Teeth are constantly exposed to a sticky film called plaque. After consuming foods that contain high amounts of sugar or starch, bacteria convert the simple carbohydrates into acids, which can attack tooth enamel. Repeated exposure to acidic attacks may lead to the development of tooth decay in some individuals.

Tooth decay tends to develop on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. The deep depressions and grooves of the chewing surfaces of teeth help masticate food. With regular brushing and flossing, bacterial debris and food particles are easily removed from smooth surfaces of teeth. However, food can easily become trapped in the pits and fissures where bristles fail to reach.

Since pits and fissures are quite difficult to keep clean, Dr. Kashfian, Beverly Hills dentist and West Hills dentist, may recommend dental sealants. Dental sealants are plastic resin materials that are applied to the back surfaces of teeth. The sealant acts as a protective barrier, preventing acid attacks from harming tooth enamel.

Dental sealants can be used on both adults and adolescents. Since tooth decay is more likely to develop in the early stages of life, Dr. Kashfian recommends children and teenagers to obtain sealants. Adults can also benefit from this protective barrier, since tooth decay has not age limitation.

The application of dental sealants is relatively simple and quick. Dr. Kashfian, expert in dental sealants i nBeverly Hills and West Hills, begins by applying a special conditioning liquid onto teeth that are to be sealed. The liquid helps thoroughly clean and prepare teeth prior to the application of the resin material. Sealant material will then be applied onto the tooth’s chewing surfaces and bonded directly onto the enamel. A special light will then be used to help cure the material to tooth structure.

Dental sealants can last years before reapplication is necessary. During your annual examinations with Dr. Kashfian, the integrity of your dental sealant will be checked. Dental sealants will then be reapplied if necessary.
